The History of Medical Astrology – Understanding Humours

With a foundation that originates back to ancient times, medical astrology differs today from what our ancestors once relied on. In the past, astrologers used this practice when they didn’t even know the exact time of birth of a patient. They would instead create a chart that focused on the time that the patient became bedridden or sick or based the chart on the first time a doctor analyzed a urine sample of the patient. Today, a decumbiture chart is set up to coincide with the time a person receives a diagnosis from a doctor or when they have become sick.

Doctors have also found medical astrology quite helpful for when it comes to elective surgery, choosing to use astrological charts to select the best times and dates for one to undergo a selective procedure – like tummy tucks and other cosmetic endeavors. While having knowledge about the time of birth of a person, a medical astrologer can still help a client choose the most opportune times to pursue a procedure.

It is important to note that medical astrology should not take the place of practical approaches when a health emergency has arisen. And while some seek the opinion of a medical astrologer, the diagnosis of illness and disease should be left to a medical physician. Medical astrology is mostly used to pinpoint various tendencies one may show towards certain kinds of illnesses. Health issues, such as decreased libido and high periods of stress are sometimes revealed through medical astrology charting, but once again – diagnosing illnesses should be left to a doctor that has gone to school for such assessments.

After receiving a diagnosis from a medical doctor, it is not uncommon for astrology enthusiasts to ask for the assistance of a medical astrologer when they are curious to learn details in conjunction with their birth chart. They may ask for an astrologer to shed light on the possible severity or duration of an illness, where they will analyze various planetary influences to give clients the answers they seek.

What Are the Humours?

In a traditional setting, many astrologers held the belief that people were characterized by one of four humours, which were attained through a sun-sign and their planetary ruler. The humours were also connected to the patient's personality and showcased their susceptibility to certain diseases.

For instance, choleric patients were often viewed as emotionally unstable and linked to anger and conditions brought on by stress and unease. Illnesses associated with this type of person were seen as 'hot and dry' – a fever being an example. If one was categorized as 'melacholic,' they succumbed to sadness and often exhibited illnesses identified as 'cold and dry.' A metabolic imbalance is an example of a common ailment.

Sanguine individuals possessed a pleasant and upbeat attitude, but usually seen as vulnerable to sudden change. The nature of their humour was described as 'hot and moist.' Suffering a viral infection was not uncommon for this kind of person. The last of the four humours refers to phlegmatic people, who may not usually be seen as energetic, still possessed a hidden strength. Their humour delivered 'cold and moist' characteristics, which made them susceptible to medical conditions, like ulcers.
