Tipping the Cable Guy

I want to hear some opinions whether it is important to tip service men.

In my opinion, anyone who drives to your house to do a service should be tipped. This includes the pizza man, gas company fixing your leak, cable company hooking up your digital service, to the lawn guys who keep your grass cut (if you have hire out or have a lawn atall). Btw, I dont have a lawn myself.

In talking a small tip depending on the quality of services performed.  Usually 5-10 dollars.

Working as a technician myself, I noticed this belief changes drastically between states, and perhaps countries. Although I never actually performed a service in another country, I am almost sure the varience still exists.

I worked in several states, and noticed some states don't tip like others.  I started in NJ. When installing cable modems, I used to get tipped regularly. I would bring home a decent amount of cash daily as an extra bonus because people appreciated my work.

Than i moved to CT to do the same job with the same company. To my dismay, the CT population obviously doesn't believe in tipping.  I have noticed a totally different attitude in CT people over NJ people, even though they are no more than 100 miles apart.

I changed from Internet, to cable service, to satellite TV, back to Cable internet and cable. I installed other services like voice over IP, Wireless networks, Telephones, Tivos and Dvr's and even Computer Related services.

CT people seem to want more. Almost everyday as a cable guy, CT residents try to pursuay the cable guy to do extra work, more TV's than they ordered, and even try to get the cable guys to do things that aren't even cable related!  And Seldom is a tip surrendered.  People don't understand, a Cable guy in CT does 15+ jobs a day, often with no lunch break.  Most cable contractors get paid per piece. Something like $7 for every line they run.  I think it is disrespectful to ask for favors with the intention of offering nothing in return.

So let me ask you, do you tip servicemen? leave your answer at
