It didn’t take that long for the ancient Babylonians to find their way about the numeric systems and soon, they were diving into mathematics and producing highly developed concepts. In this article, we will focus on ancient Babylonians and medicine.

Babylonian Mathematics cont.

At first, the Sumerians laid the groundwork, but the Babylonians took over and became one of the first civilizations to develop a relatively complex system of numbers and mathematics. Some of their theories and notions didn’t even touch other parts of the world into centuries later. However, the influence of the ancient Babylonians is still very much evident, especially when you take a look at their contributions to the measurement of time, as well as degrees of angles.

The numerical system of the Babylonians was called sexagesimal, which centers on base sixty in things such as 60 minutes in an hour and 360 degrees in a circle. By the time of Hammurapi rolled around, the Babylonians were also dabbling in symbols for ten, one hundred and one thousand – creating a system that showcased decimals. Overall, the Babylonians were quite advanced for their time. They were aware of the value of pi and worked with square roots.

Medicine

In ancient Babylonian times, medicine was the subject for two kinds of people: the doctor (also known as asu) and the exorcist (referred to as dsipu). Depending on the individual, they may call one or both to their side when sick. The Babylonians also had a collection of problem-solving texts that included many different possible symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis, and suggested treatments. When more serious cases arose, surgery was performed – even to the most fragile of body parts like the eye.

The knowledge that the Babylonians held was great, as they were keen to the workings of the human and animal body. They studied an array of topics that included learning about the pulse and circulation of the blood. One of the oldest Babylonian texts featuring medicine is dated back to the First Babylonian Dynasty, which took place in the first half of the 2nd millennium BC. For the most information medical text of these times, it would be the Diagnostic Handbook (written by physician Esagil-kin-apli of Borsippa, who lived during the days of Babylonian king Adad-apla-iddina (1069-1046 BC).

Just with other scientific endeavors, the ancient Babylonians also mixed religion with their medicinal practices. When a patient was sick, it was common for a physician to treat using therapeutic methods that involved creams, pills, and bandages. If a physical cure did not seem to solve a medical issue, Babylonian physicians would perform an exorcism as a way to cleanse the body of any curses.
