A couple from Sullivan’s island are finally coming forward with a sighting they had of a mysterious object that terrorized them almost 30 years ago. To protect their identity, their names are withheld, but the experience they had no doubt has left a deep impression on them both. From the language used in the report, they are still shaken by the encounter.
As the couple walked along the sands of a nearby beach, they came to a small natural tunnel, which, as they passed through, they became aware of several lighted boats on the horizon chugging along fishing. There was one other thing, as well. A mysterious bright light on the horizon. As they watched they realized the light was unmoving, but not a ship. As they tried to decide if it was a planet or a star, they both stopped as they realized how dead everything was around them. No crickets, seagulls, or animals of any sort were making a sound. Though they had walked this beach at night before, they had never witnessed such a silence. Even the waves crashing against the coast seemed to be muted.
Suddenly, the light darted to the left, a few inches from the couples’ perspective. Thinking it was a search helicopter, they continued to stand watching it as it repeated the move, darting closer and closer. Quickly it became apparent that this craft, whatever it was, couldn’t possibly be a helicopter. They stood watching it as it shot toward them within a hundred feet of the shoreline, directing a bright light into the water. “It was an incredibly bright saucer shaped object,” one witness said, “with colored lights all over it blinking in syncopated patterns that changed when the motion of the craft changed. It sat there for a couple minutes as we stood there in awe of what we were seeing.”
As they continued to watch, the object flew over one of the beach houses, cocked at a 45 degree angle, and remained suspended there for several seconds before hovering away, then obscured by other houses. The two were left wondering if what they had seen had actually been real. As though to punctuate the sighting, the red ringed saucer shaped object soared overhead once again, this time followed by two other identical craft in formation.
What are we to draw from this sighting? The witness, though shaken, was clearly articulate and fully in control of his mental faculties. He had served in the air-force as well as an electrician and salesman. We can only thank them for their bravery in coming forward about this sighting and hope that it spurs others to contribute to the unreported and often dramatic sightings of the 1980’s. Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this story is the question: What was the craft doing hovering over the beach house? Was someone in there waiting for it? Or was it a UFO abduction that these two witnesses spotted without knowing? It’s interesting how rarely an actual abduction is witnessed by a third party, and it only makes this testimony all the more interesting.
