The founder of Massachusetts Institute Of Technology Media Labs, Nicholas Negroponte, is preparing the first prototype of the $100 Laptop. New renovations on an older product will impact the new computers performance, price, and durability. There will even be a crank to power it if electricity is scarce.
The laptops will be protected with an outer rubber covering, fold in new ways, and use flash drives rather than hard drives. It is suspected that flash drives will prove to be more durable than standard hard drives because they have no moving parts like standard drives do.
USB, Wireless Networking, And File-Sharing will all be supported and easy to set up. And the best thing about this new gadget is it is expected to cost under A hundred dollars!! Just think of the implications this could bring.
Poor old DELL and COMPAQ will have a hard time matching that price. With this new product at such a great price, a laptop will no longer be a tool of luxury, but rather a tool of necessity. Just as beepers, and cell phones made their way into everyday life, the laptop is stepping up profoundly with top of the line offerings.
There is already talk of third world nations, and hundreds of thousands are practically already sold to schools and different groups, when the idea manifests into reality.
