Imagine for a moment the universe in its entirety. Though it is impossible to truly understand how vast its scope is, the feeling it elicits as we stare into the obsidian formless blanket of light and think about how big it is, is it truly impossible to look into it and feel anything but insignificant? The nihilistic feeling that mankind does not matter because it is so small and insignificant seems a limited understanding of worth, regardless of personal beliefs dealing only with the objective observations accepted about our world and the universe.

With NASA's funding cut incredibly short it seems future manned missions to mars have been put on indefinite hold. Not so, says one company which claims to have independently developed a rocket that could propel a human crew to the Red Planet in less than 40 days. The company, founded by former NASA astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz is one of several that are attempting to close the gap between the budget cuts NASA has been suffering and the private sector. And it says it has the technology to do it.

It's been speculated for some time that the Martian moon of Phobos may be exhibiting the unusual orbital pattern that it does because it is actually hollow. Or rather than completely shelled like an egg with a hollow center, it may rather be largely porous rock with massive caverns reaching all the way into its core. If this were the case, there are several possible applications and advantages to exploring a moon or planetoid that has caverns reaching to the center.

The incredible Murchison Meteorite is rumored to be a space rock that is thought to maybe not only be older than the Sun, but contain organic compounds; the building blocks of life. If this turns out to be true, then it could be evidence of organic life long before Earth even existed.

"I wonder if there were fewer stars back then," goes Henry's line in the classic play "The Lion in Winter" in reference to the wise men spotting a new star amongst so many others blanketing the night sky. Is it possible the proverbial Star of David could actually have been something other than a star? And how exactly does a star hover above one localized building? The prolific presence of stars throughout history and mythology brings forth a whole new dialogue on the possibilities they hold.

As NASA is expected to seek funding from private organizations under the new spending plan and retire the current space capsule, China expresses a great deal of interest in putting its own astronauts on the moon. The Chinese Space Agency suggests it could do so within the next decade. The move is being called the dawn of a new age of space exploration, while others lament the US' potential loss of Lunar supremacy.

The massive object has been met with a small amount of head scratching and a story that it is likely just a comet blasted into a strange shape by other bodies in space.

According to the infamous astronomer Carl Sagan, astronomy is the study of everything. Besides peering into the sky with a telescope, an astronomer has to learn and dabble in other fields, such as geography. It is not uncommon for an astronomer to study chemistry, physics, seismology, biology, meteorology, computer science and quantum physics. In this article, you will learn the different fields that make astronomers more equipped to explore outer space.

NASA’s Kepler telescope has had quite a bounty of discoveries since March when it first launched, including a new one that’s making news due to its high levels of strangeness. The Kepler telescope has now discovered two bodies far hot to be planets, yet too small to be stars. They’re bigger and hotter than the planets we have seen so far, but even the smallest star is several times larger than either of the objects.

Asteroid Apophis is a name we are relatively unfamiliar with today, but in 20 years it will be a household name, and it will be synonymous with doomsday. At least that’s what scientists are saying as they plot its trajectory and speed and find that in the year 2036, it will impact with Earth having devastating results. Now Russia says they’re building a program designed to destroy Apophis and save the world.

Astronomers have discovered a planet residing in the constellation Ophiucus, which is Greek for “Snake holder.” The planet’s surface is primarily water, but it is suspected to have a silicon and iron core. This wouldn’t be terribly significant, except the planet itself seems to be a likely candidate for life, and is more like Earth than anything discovered yet. Could this discovery finally be the one that changes our understanding of life elsewhere in the galaxy forever?

The prospect of discovering life similar to life on Earth often runs into several road blocks when surveying the heavens via telescope or advanced radar arrays. One of the primary differences between Earth and other planets is the major difference between the Sun and other stars. Whenever a Sun-like star is discovered, special attention is paid to it, since it holds the potential for future inhabitation, but also could be host to life that could have evolved along similar paths to Earth.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) have announced that a discovery a little over a year ago indicate that there may be life on the surface of the moon in some places. The incredible discovery was yet another groundbreaking lunar revelation thanks to India’s Chandrayaan-1 probe. Those who have been following Chandrayaan-1 may remember that it was also the first probe to detect signs of water on the moon. This was, of course, confirmed later by the LCROSS lunar platform which crashed into the surface. The announcement was made at the international radar symposium Friday afternoon.

How did the planets come to be the way they are today? Are the forces that formed them still around? Where do we stand in this massive cosmic ballet known as the Solar System? Recent discoveries of the sun’s most intimate neighbor, who shares its name with the Messenger God of Greek mythology. What do we share in common with our fiery friend two doors down?

Roosters reportedly crowed, and baby birds noisily chirped ready for the day to begin this morning in Utah. The only problem was, it was 2:00 in the morning. Night became day as an explosion lit up the sky with such force, that some residents of Utah thought a nuclear bomb had gone off. Shortly after the initial blinding flash, calls started pouring in to the local news carrier, KSL TV. Excited sky watchers were not sure what they had seen, but many seasoned astronomers estimated it had been a meteor the likes of which had not been seen in the area ever in recorded history.

Though reporting agencies have recently been inundated with a string of UFO sightings that seem to defy explanation, the vast majority of UFO sightings appear to have a more mundane nature. As exciting as these sightings can be, with the Perseid meteor showers a couple of days ago and the Taurid meteor shower coming up November 12th as earth moves into the debris field of comet 2p/Encke, a string of false UFO positives are expected to start springing up within the next few days.

From celebrating the Day of the Nymphs to paying homage to a Roman Catholic Saint, the end of December not only marked Christmas celebrations, but also presents a handful of birthday connections that deal with the Middle Ages and ancient Greek goddesses.
