Syfy channel probes lighthouse specters
[Direct

For more than 150 years, the Pensacola Lighthouse has beamed out light to ships as far as 27 miles away. On Wednesday, the lore of the lighthouse will beam across the entire country. "Ghost Hunters," the Syfy channel's most-watched program, will air an episode on the Pensacola Lighthouse at Pensacola Naval Air Station. Last week, "Ghost Hunters" aired a short segment on supposed paranormal activity at the Pensacola Historical Museum, which is housed in the 124-year-old Arbona building in downtown Pensacola. Though the "Ghost Hunters" team found very little at the museum — they did hear a few unexplained sounds upstairs — promos promise plenty of otherworldly action at the Pensacola Lighthouse.

How Men Really Stare at Goats
[Direct

Joesph McMoneagle was awarded the Legion of Merit for his service as a U.S. Army psychic spy, for “producing crucial and vital intelligence unavailable from any other source.” McMoneagle's how-to guide, "Remote Viewing Secrets: A Handbook," is a down-to-Earth instructional manual on the subject available from the Mobile Public Library at either the Moorer or West Regional branches. Apparently, remote viewing is something almost anyone can do. Although mystics have been paranormally collecting information for millenia, in 1972 physicists Harold Puthoff and Russell Targ formally developed a standardized, scientific method for gathering intelligence paranormally.

Berks psychic expert sees boost for ESP, related paranormal phenomena from Clooney film
[Direct

Dale E. Graff never stared at goats. But the Tilden Township man did train American troops and civilians to read minds, interpret dreams and use other psychic abilities in an effort to learn Soviet secrets during the Cold War. That military program he founded and led is now portrayed in the movie, "The Men Who Stare at Goats," starring George Clooney. The film focuses on a team of Americans with psychic abilities who are learning to harness their powers. Among their experiments is trying to kill goats by staring at the animals. While Graff said the filmmakers took liberties with the facts for the sake of entertainment, the film is bringing attention to an important project that was top secret while it operated.

'Mystical Journey' stresses healing from within
[Direct

Wanda L. Winters finds the term "fortune teller" distasteful. She charges a fee for the psychic and spiritual counseling she administers to those seeking her help, but said she's not in it for the money. "I'm here to help people find out who they are, help them take back their power and use it. It's called owning your power," the Alexandria Bay resident said between readings at Sunday's Mystical Journey Holistic and Psychic Faire at the Best Western University Inn. "A lot of people depend on psychics for guidance, and that's a horrible thing. It's up to them to do what is right for them."

Facts Behind 'Men Who Stare at Goats'
[Direct
Link]
Can people really influence the physical world with thought alone? And if so, dare we use that power for evil, instead of good? Or will the effort come back to haunt us? That is the quandary posed by the film “The Men Who Stare at Goats,” and, even more so, by the book of the same name that inspired the film. The film presents a largely fictitious story based on all-too-real projects and programs conducted by various agencies of the government. Very little of it is literally true, yet many of the stranger events in the film happened in a manner similar to the one portrayed.

Group gives ghost hunting crash course at Rock Ford
[Direct

The kitchen at Rock Ford Plantation was filled Sunday afternoon with people chatting, sipping cider and munching on ginger snaps. But on a night in July, someone in the kitchen apparently wanted Bridget Gallagher dead. Gallagher, co-founder of The East Coast Anomaly Investigators, was posing questions in the kitchen that night, hoping to evoke reactions from the ghosts reputed to haunt the historic mansion. Although nothing unusual occurred at the time, a playback of a digital recording reveals a voice hissing "kill her" in the background. "That doesn't stop me. It doesn't stop me at all," Gallagher said Sunday. "But I don't think they like me down there."

Book investigates area supernatural activities
[Direct

Paranormal investigator Don Wagner of Finleyville with Marci McGuinness of Ohiopyle have written "Hauntings of Pittsburgh and the Laurel Highlands," outlining 28 investigations of supernatural activities. Wagner founded the Peace of Mind Paranormal Society after trying to disprove the existence of paranormal activity. "I wanted to prove to my kids it was all my imagination." He and his son, Matthew, walked down 13 Bends Road in Fox Chapel and heard screaming and, although they did not hear it at the time, their tape recorder captured the voice of a little girl saying, "Don't kill me," Wagner said. "There was a girl killed in 1978 on her way to school. It sent me in a whole new direction. It's been 10 years now. It wasn't my son, it wasn't me, saying anything. We were the only ones there at the time."

Most people focus on ghosts and otherworldly things only in the fall close to Halloween, but a local production company with connections to Scottdale has made the paranormal its central focus. Roger Marsh, a former Scottdale resident who recently moved back to the area from Chicago, is no stranger to the paranormal. He is director of communications for the Mutual UFO Network, the National UFO Examiner and the National Paranormal News Examiner for Examiner.com. He also is president and CEO of Tremont Avenue Productions, which produced the full-length film "Mars Attacks Mt. Pleasant" and the docudrama "Haunted R&R Station," both of which were filmed locally.

'ET could exist, although there's no hard evidence' says Vatican's top astronomer
[Direct

ET could exist, but there is no hard evidence he does, the Vatican's top astronomer declared at the end of a Vatican conference on extraterrestrial life. Father Jose Gabriel Funes, who led the week-long conference on astrobiology, said that extraterrestrial life was a valid area of investigation for the Catholic Church. Father Funes said: 'Although astrobiology is a new and developing field, questions on the origins of life and the presence of life in the universe outside Earth are legitimate issues and merit serious consideration. It makes sense to see if other forms of life exist beyond the earth, but for the time being though there is no evidence to prove that such life does exist.'

Special Assignment: Wisconsin Werewolf
[Direct

Some of you may roll your eyes, but there are many people in Wisconsin who claim to have seen something unexplainable. Is it a werewolf? Bigfoot? An unidentified wild animal? First, throw out all of your Hollywood preconceptions. It doesn't change from a full moon, and no one's shot it with a silver bullet. But hundreds of people right here in Wisconsin are saying there's something out there. If there is something out there, popular culture has done it no favors. Most people scoff at the idea, but some claim there are many rational witnesses who've come face-to-face with the irrational. Reports in Wisconsin date back to the 1930s. And they keep coming.

Robert Rines: The Death of a Monster Hunter
[Direct
Link]
If there is a Loch Ness monster, she’s feeling pretty good about herself right now. Robert H. Rines, the man who came closer than anyone to proving the existence of the fabled serpent, died last week at the age of 87. Over three and a half decades, and many, many trips to the famous Scottish lake, Rines produced numerous theories, several tantalizing photographs, and—alas—no evidence sufficient to convince the scientific community. Mainstream biology today holds the same position it did in June, 1972, when Rines first saw “a large, darkish hump, covered... with rough, mottled skin, like the back of an elephant”: there is no plesiosaurus, nor any other aquatic dinosaur, nor slithering monstrosity of any kind, in the murky depths of Loch Ness.

Police worker wins psychic ruling
[Direct

A police employee sacked for claiming psychics should be used to crack crimes has won a landmark ruling that his views should be seen as a faith. Alan Power, 62, from Merseyide, claimed he was forced out of his job with Greater Manchester Police because of his spiritualist views in October 2008. An employment tribunal rejected a police authority appeal his beliefs did not amount to religious views. A hearing on 23 November is due to rule on if he was forced out of his job. Mr Power said he believed psychics could contact people after their death and help in the investigation of crime. He said his beliefs stemmed back to his childhood when he saw "ghosts".

Unidentified flying objects in the skies above South Tyneside have sparked a UFO frenzy. Dozens of Gazette readers have got in touch after Gary Sinclar revealed he spotted a strange orange light – which resembled a burning plane – above his home in West Harton, South Shields, on Halloween. However, the light which appeared to speed up before it vanished was seen all across the borough on various nights. Jed and Pauline McConville, were amazed when they saw the UFO on November 5, above the New Mill pub in Chesterton Road, South Shields, just after 5pm. Mr McConcille said: "It just seem to speed up and stopped all of a sudden before vanishing." Robert Shaw was quick enough to capture it on his mobile phone as he attended a Halloween party in Sunderland.

UFO reported in southern Tracy skies
[Direct

A slowly moving band of deep blue lights seen in the cloudless southern Tracy sky Monday night had a few people wondering Tuesday morning what the heck it was they saw. Larry Gustafson, 49, said his neighbor Ervin Floyd banged on his door at about 7 p.m. in the Morehead Park trailer court on Chrisman Road near 11th Street and urged him to check out the unusual sight. He said he ran outside, looked up, spotted the lights in the night sky and then ran back inside to grab binoculars. By the time he was back outside, the lights had disappeared. Gustafson said the lights hung in the sky about 5 minutes. Sometimes they moved, he said, and at other times, only one light shone.

He said: "It was fantastic having everyone over to Scarborough. There were a few technical problems, but the feedback has been very positive. We've learned from experience – don't leave anything to chance."

NASA says it has no record of UFO landing in Pennsylvania in the 1960s
[Direct
Link]
NASA said it can find no records mentioning an unidentified object that may have landed in western Pennsylvania nearly 44 years ago. The Coalition for Freedom of Information, a volunteer group that seeks to bring more credibility to the subject of UFOs through journalism and freedom of information quests, sued NASA in 2003 seeking information about the event in Kecksburg. The group’s federal lawsuit, backed by the SyFy Channel cable network, was settled in October 2007 when NASA agreed to pay $50,000 in legal fees and search some of its records. But that nearly two-year search ended in August and yielded nothing, Leslie Kean, a New York-based freelance author and documentarian who directs the all-volunteer CFI, told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “I still believe, from all the work and the research and everything, that something came down” from the sky, Kean said. “But what it was, I have no idea.” NASA’s press office didn’t immediately return calls for comment Wednesday.

Walcott Mills: A Ghost Hunt
[Direct

Southern Minnesota is full of ghost stories, and on this Friday the 13th, we'd like to introduce you to another one, the story of Walcott Mills. The town was almost completely destroyed more than 100 years ago, but local ghost hunters say "something" is still there. On a dark night just a few days before Halloween, we were on the road to Faribault and the site that sits just outside the city once known as Walcott Mills. The Investigative Paranormal Society of Minnesota, or TIPSMN, says it's one of the most active paranormal locations they've ever investigated. "We've gotten orbs, apparitions and several EVP's" says Nick Larsen. EVP's are electronic voice phenomenon captured on digital recorders like this one. Ask a question... "If you're here can you tell us your name?"

Ghosthunters appeal

An appeal by a group of ghost-hunters for somewhere paranormal to probe has garnered good wishes - but not ghouls. Great Yarmouth Paranormal Investigations (GYPI) is actively looking for haunts to study but despite a Mercury plea for bookings the group's diary remains eerily quiet. Founder Val Dover said however that she had been heartened by the positive public response with a flutter of emails and telephone calls wishing them all the best with the hobby-activity - a free service which aims to reassure people worried they may be living with a spirit in limbo. Ms Dover added that the run-up to Christmas was a always a quiet time and that the group had plenty of outdoor locations lined up for the new year like St Benets Abbey in Ludham and the Roman fort at Burgh Castle.

For some area residents, it's ghost huntin', not ghost bustin', that makes them feel good. With cameras, computer equipment and mics, area ghost hunters participated Friday in the first Paranormal Exploration of the Lake County History Center in Painesville Township. Down in the depths of the structure, built in 1875 as a county home, organizer Cathi Weber talked about gathering evidence to prove the existence of the paranormal while in the background shadows played across a decades-old prison section. "We're looking for evidence that there is something else out there; that's more than ghost busting," said Weber, who runs a historic/ghost tour of downtown Willoughby.
