From the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa to the State Capitol Building, the state of Alabama has its fair share of haunted tales and interesting ghosts. In this article, you will encounter reported incidents and paranormal activity thought to take place at the University of Montevallo, Hudson House, and Huntingdon College.
University of Montevallo , Montevallo
The entire campus is subject to a haunted tale or two, as the tunnel running underground the school has been credited with a host of reported odd happenings. The tunnels date back to Civil War use. Two haunted tales associated with the school include King House and Main Hall. At King House, people have felt unexplainable chills when sitting on their bed. Sometimes, books fall to the floor for no reason and are found on a page that makes reference to hauntings of the site.
It is believed that the ghost of a 16-year-old student who died while cooking fudge in her room can be found at Main Hall. After knocking over a bottle of alcohol onto her nightgown, she was engulfed in flames. Despite an attempt to save her life, the girl ran out into the hallway and burned to death. Some say you can see her ghosts running the halls with a flaming nightgown.
Hudson House , Ashland
Situated in the middle of nowhere, an old house stands in Ashland. The Hudson House has a reputation for ghost tales because people believe more than one unsettled spirit haunts the premises. If you walk around the house, it’s been reported that unexplainable voices and footsteps can be heard. Sometimes, the sounds of dogs panting have been detected. People who have stood outside of the home have reported feeling the sensation of someone tapping their shoulder. On top of the roof, a freakish dark figure has been reported to run across.
State Capitol Building , Montgomery
Both a custodian and the architect of the Capitol Building claimed to have seen the ghost of a Confederate woman wandering about the halls located on the second floor offices. In the Governor’s reception area restroom, it is said that water faucets have a mind of their own and turn on by themselves.
Huntingdon College , Montgomery
A ghost called the Red Lady haunts one of the old dorms on campus called Pratt. When sighted, she is always wearing all red. Following her suicide, the Red Lady has appeared to several people. The Ghost on the Green is another ghost who has been seen on campus. He also committed suicide, choosing to shoot himself on the green. Nowadays, he has been found to walk the green at night. When the ghost isn’t seen, his presence can be detected. Some people believe they have felt the ghost tugging at clothes, messing up hair, or blowing in ears.
University of Alabama , Tuscaloosa
The ghosts of four Civil War soldiers have been seen wandering about the Quad. Another spirit believed to claim the Quad is a man who hung himself in the vicinity and haunts the guard shack located next to the Amelia Gorgas Library. The library is believed to house the ghost of Amelia Gorgas because she was always buried under her work.
