When looking for scary Nebraskan hideaways, don’t forget to visit towns and cities like Columbus, Scottsbluff, and Concordia University located in Seward. In Columbus, you will find that the learning institution of Columbus High School is filled with rumor of a ghostly teacher who passed away of a heart attack nearly 50 years ago one day after school. The janitors often attribute the unexplainable slamming of doors and the odd turning on of machinery in the middle of the night to the teacher.
In Scottsbuff, take a photo by the Scottsbluff National Monument and you stand the chance to come in contact with the spirit of a woman that appears in white. She has been seen walking about the base of the bluff located on the opposing side. Her haunting times take place close to the end of July and continue until the start of August. If you come to the site around 12am or one in the morning , you may come face-to-face with her presence. It is suggested to stay patient when visiting this location.
Concordia University located in Seward has student housing called David Dorm, which is believed to serve as the haunting spot of ghostly Native Americans. The dorm was constructed during the 1970s and at the time , bones were uncovered. The remains were turned over to researchers for an analysis and learned that they dated back to the 1700s. Maps of the area at that time suggest that the bone belonged to the local Native Americans. The permission to continue building on the land was given by the city, but they had to make sure to hand over all the remains found.
Since then, odd occurrences have been known to take place, including the unexplainable actions of electrical equipment, such as curling irons, computers, and blow dryers. These items and more have been known to turn on unexpectedly. It its the belief that the Native Americans are upset with Concordia for building on top of a burial ground. Ever since 1976, the students have submitted a handful of oddball reports attributed to ‘angry spirits.’
Another eerie tale of hauntedness in Seward is associated with the Seward Middle School, where janitors have come across some pretty odd occurrences. At night, they swear they hear and see children walking up and down the hallways in the middle of the night. One janitor claims to have spoken to one of the ghosts. The uncomfortable feeling associated with the school dates back to the burning of a day care center that took the lives of all inside. The latest section of the school was built in its place. The girls locker room also display funny activity, as the showers are known to turn on and off on their own. When janitors turn off the lights in the locker room, they return later that night to find they are back on.
Seward is also the location where you will encounter Hobo’s Culvert, where legend has it that the bodies of the traveling homeless have been buried. Ghosts supposedly inhabit this part of town.
