Facts and Trivia: The Infamous Charles Darwin I

Posted on March 6, 2012 By jim No Comments on Facts and Trivia: The Infamous Charles Darwin I

When it comes to the topic of evolution, one of the most well known of researchers mentioned is certainly Charles Darwin. He is responsible for jumpstarting the conversation and acknowledgement regarding the theory of evolution and natural selection. In this article, you will learn trivia and facts associated with this infamous English naturalist.

1. The full name of the English naturalist was Charles Robert Darwin.

2. Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 (in England) and died on April 19, 1882 (in England).

3. His theory of evolution and natural selection centered on the gradual, nonrandom process that makes certain biological traits more or less common in a population. It plays a significant role in evolution and affects the varied reproduction of subsequent generations. For example, the long necks of giraffes help their survival because they are able to reach high sources of food over the animals that are unable to benefit from this trait. Since this trait adds to the longevity of the species, it remains part of the reproductive process.

4. Darwin studied a range of subjects to prove his theories of evolution. For example, he noted that the beak shapes of different species of finches have evolved by natural selection to cater to the preferred food of the varied kinds of birds.

5. Darwin’s theories not only took into account the physical differences of animals and people, but also sexual selection and psychological influences. For example, an albino creature is less likely to succeed in the wild because its easily spotted color makes it an easy target for predators. Also, in the case of albino peacocks , it is less likely for this kind of creature to find a mate and reproduce because of its lack of color , one of the characteristics of a peacock that attracts a female to a male within this species.

6. Darwin studied at Cambridge University. It was here that he satisfied his passion for natural science.

7. After attending college, Darwin served as a naturalist on the ship HMS Beagle, which was captained by Robert Fitzroy. He stayed on the vessel for five years while it traveled around the world taking a western route. This journey took place between 1831 and 1836. The trip allowed Darwin to come in contact with a multitude of plants and animals.

8. On November 24, 1859, Darwin published a book titled, “On the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle of Life.” It sold out in one day.

9. In 1871, Darwin published a book titled “The Descent of Man,” which concentrated on the origins of people.

10. Darwin’s interest in nature led him to abandon his medical study at the University of Edinburgh. He chose to instead investigate marine invertebrates.
