Rumor has it that a second installment in the ‘Avengers’ movie franchise may hit theaters sometime close to 2015, as the first film’s director Joss Whedon is on board to write and direct the sequel. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson, ‘The Avengers’ was released in 2012 ”“ and did very well in the box office. The superhero film mixed Roman mythology, superhuman powers and other themes of fantasy. The movie also has a great deal of subliminal imagery and messages.
“The Avengers” was produced and distributed by Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, continuing where the Marvel Comics left off. If the actors and actresses look a bit familiar in the movie, it’s because they are the same cast members who have played in the following films: Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).
The plot of the Avengers’ movie centers on a secret agency’s (called S.H.I.E.L.D.) recruitment of Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America, so they may form a superhero team that can save the world from being destroyed. An energy source called the Tesseract has been activated and its unknown potential threatens the safety of the world. In the meantime, a space portal opens and allows the exiled Norse god Loki to enter Earth. Loki uses the Tesseract to exercise mind control over various members of S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel.
With themes such as mind control, mythical figures, and the need for the world to be ‘saved’ by something other than God, it’s no wonder that the movie is filled with interesting imagery and subliminal messages:
The Black Cube and Hypercube ”“ Saturn worshippers have dated back to ancient times with cults that believed the mythological figure had the power to give humans godly powers. When the god Saturn was referenced by Semitic civilizations, he was known as ‘El’ and represented by a black cube. In “The Avengers,” the black cube appears in a scene that involves the inside of S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. Loki appears inside the black cube. The Tesserect itself (or hypercube) is another form of this kind of symbolism within the movie.
Pentagrams ”“ Depending on who you speak to, the star symbol decorating the shield of Captain America resembles an inverted pentagram.
Black Sun Symbolism ”“ When the sky opens up to release Loki’s soldiers, the imagery resembles black sun symbolism.
Imperial Eagle ”“ An eagle design is featured inside of S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, which looks quite similar to the German Coat of Arms and the Nazi insignia used during World War II. This symbol also appears several times throughout the background of the movie, including decorating walls and in yellow on the jet runway scene.
Single Eye Symbolism ”“ Not only is the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. one eyed, but other instances occur where single-eye symbolism appears. The one eye is a reference to the Eye of Horus and Luciferian worship.
Freemasonry Symbolism ”“ Freemasonry symbolism can be detected in the film. Tony Stark (also known as Iron Man) is part of the elite ”“ rich and influential. In one scene, you will notice that the license plate on his vehicle reads: STARK33. It is the choice in number that subliminally references the Freemasons, where some members belong to the 33rd degree of the society.
