Superstitions Dealing With Weddings

Are wedding bells in the near future for you or is one of your friends getting ready to take that plunge? In this article, you will encounter superstitions that deal with the day you or someone else decides to take that walk down the aisle of love.

Before the wedding, comes the bridal shower where a ton of superstitions can be found. In regards to the first gift that the bride opens, it should be the first gift that she uses. For the more extreme believers in superstitions, some believe that whatever is said during this day, should be repeated during the night of the wedding. Someone should be assigned to take notes on what is said so that the bride can use these during this night. Some believe that whoever gave the third gift that was opened, will soon become pregnant. All of the ribbons that come from the gifts should be saved so that they can be used to create a practice bouquet for the wedding rehearsal. This is supposed to bring good luck.

So the bride is preparing for one of the biggest days of her life. We cannot forget some of these sayings pertaining to what the bride wears or has in her possession during the ceremony. Do these sound familiar?

“Something old,
Something new,
Something borrowed,
Something blue,
And a lucky sixpence
In her shoe”

or

“Married in White, you have chosen right
Married in Grey, you will go far away,
Married in Black, you will wish yourself back,
Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead,
Married in Green, ashamed to be seen,
Married in Blue, you will always be true,
Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl,
Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow,
Married in Brown, you will live in the town,
Married in Pink, you spirit will sink”

The time and day of the week that a wedding is held is the subject of various superstitions. Marrying on a Monday should bring health, while Tuesdays are for wealth. The best day of the week to marry is considered to be Wednesday. Thursdays are for losses and Fridays are for crosses, where the unluckiest day of the week to marry is believed to be Saturday, which coincidently is also the most convenient to get everyone together for the important event.

On the wedding day, there are numerous bad and good omens that you may or may not choose to consider. This goes way beyond concentrating on what your horoscope had to say. Good signs include spying a rainbow, the day is sunny, a black cat greets you, as well as meeting a person with the occupation of being a chimney sweep. Bad omens include seeing an open grave, meeting a nun or monk, as well as seeing a lizard, pig or hare run across the road.

After the ceremony, for those who were not lucky enough to catch the wedding bouquet, it is said that if a single woman sleeps with a piece of wedding cake under her pillow, she will have dreams consisting of her future husband. How sweet!
