Shortly after investigating a home owner’s encounter with a large hairy smelly creature in Greenfield, Ohio, I met a lovely young lady, fell in love, and a year later we were married. (See Buckeye Bigfoot https://www.unexplainable.net/artman/publish/article_2103.shtml) Although I wouldn’t know if for a few years, she would prove to be more dangerous than the beast I had investigated but we’ll leave that story for another time.
About 10 months after our wedding, we were blessed with our first daughter and lived near the small rural town of Logan, in Hocking County, Ohio. I worked as a Respiratory Therapist at the local hospital and for a local Home Care Company evaluating and treating patients in their homes. Because the hospital was small, I was on call for emergencies most of the time, and more often than I cared to, spent late nights in the hospital with critically ill patients. Needless to say, my wife wasn’t thrilled with spending late nights, sometimes into the early morning hours, alone with our new baby. We lived in the Wayne National Forest area and although it was beautiful, we lived in a fairly remote part of the county at the time.
So we bought a Timberwolf! Angel was a beautiful gray female registered Timberwolf. Timberwolves by their nature are fearless animals and very protective of their territory as well as their masters, especially the females. The breeders warned us to be ready for the day when Angel would challenge our authority because the dog would invariably do that. The warning was to be sure to take control and show Angel who was really in charge at that moment or it could be a deadly encounter and never again would we have a second chance. In spite of my concerns about having an animal with such a demeanor in close proximity to my wife and baby, my wife convinced me to buy Angel for her protection.
About 2 months after we bought Angel, I came home at around 2:30 AM from the hospital. The mobile home was elevated and we didn’t have the skirting so Angel typically slept under the steps that were strategically placed at the door ”“ how novel. That particular night, I pulled up to the trailer situated in the country. Originally, we shared the lot with another mobile home but shortly after we moved in, they moved out. I don’t think the two events were related but its irrelevant anyway. This particular night, before I could open my car door, Angel slinked out from under the steps and around to the door of my car and firmly planted both front paws on the door and snarled at me viciously.
I quickly recognized this as our challenging moment. I rolled down the window and told Angle in a firm voice to get down off the car. Angel was probably 10 inches around at the neck with slim shoulders and a slender body, but in the darkness and in her current state of mind, the hair on her neck stood straight out and she appeared to be a huge animal. She ignored my command and so I took command another way. I made a fist and hit her right between the eyes as hard as I could and repeated my command for her to get down. This time, she heeded and promptly stood down from the car. After that we had to be very careful when strangers came to visit, but she was never a threat to us and very protective of both my daughter and wife.
Roughly a month later, I was again working late with a critical patient in the hospital. I came home about 3:00 AM and my wife met me at the door. Angel didn’t. My wife said she had heard strange noises in the woods at the eastern edge of the lot and that Angel had been acting strange all evening. Angel, remember very territorial and afraid of nothing, stayed very close to the trailer and growled at the woods every time she heard the moaning, almost howling noise. I didn’t think much about it and my wife calmed down and went on to bed while I showered before joining her.
By the time I climbed in to bed, it was raining off and on and just as I was about to drop off to sleep, there was a loud thump and the trailer shook. At first I thought of thunder, but the noise wasn’t really like the sonic clap of thunder, and there wasn’t any lightning. A few minutes later the trailer began to rock and I got up to check on my daughter who was sleeping in her own bed room at the other end of the trailer. I walked from our bedroom past the door and kitchen, through the living room and down the left halfway past the bath to my daughters room and when I stepped through her open door into the room, the rocking stopped. So did I.
My daughter was sleeping soundly and as I was considering letting her sleep and returning to bed, when I heard a low grumbling growl outside the trailer. I picked up my daughter and took her back to the bedroom to my wife. As I walked back through the kitchen I heard a scratching at the door so I retrieved a 20 gauge shotgun from the closet in the bedroom and went back to the door. The trailer began to rock again, more violently this time, and now above the scratching, I could hear Angel whimpering so I opened the door and she jumped inside and laid down on the kitchen floor shaking.
By this time, of course, I found myself in a nervous shiver as well. The wind wasn’t blowing and there was no rain so the only sounds were the growling from the back of the trailer and the creaking of the trailer as it rocked. The trailer was secured with hurricane tie-downs, so the facts that it was rocking and that whatever was doing it scared the fearless timberwolf into hiding behind her master and I had a wife and baby to protect were enough to make me stay inside and look out the windows rather than venturing into the night.
The rocking and growling went on for 20 to 25 minutes before it suddenly stopped. 5 minutes later or so, I ventured to the back bedroom on the other side of the trailer from my daughters room to look out the back window ”“ ever so cautiously. As I pulled the curtain expecting to see the beast there was a sudden flash of lightning and I jumped back. Less than a second later the tremendous clap of thunder shook the windows and within a few more seconds a torrential downpour began and thumped on the roof of the mobile home with a deafening din.
I couldn’t get back to sleep the rest of the night but about 7:30 that morning, the rain stopped and the sun peaked through the breaking clouds. My wife and daughter were snuggled and sleeping in our bedroom and Angel was passively watching me as I went to the door to go investigate by the light of day what had been taking place earlier. Angel wouldn’t follow me out the door in spite of my repeated coaxing, so once outside, I crouched to look under the trailer to the other end and then panned the lot from there to the woods and could see nothing.
The rain had left puddles of water standing all around the driveway and low spots in the lot including at the corners of the mobile home. The grass with thick and made finding any tracks impossible except immediately adjacent to the back of the trailer where the grass was mauled and uprooted and in the fresh brown soggy dirt were a number of footprints. I’d seen tracks like them before, in Greenfield, Ohio, almost 3 years earlier.
There were no tracks detectable in the thick grass to or from the mobile home and I scoured the lot from the trailer back to the woods and in the western direction to the gravel road but could find nothing to indicate which direction the creature had came from or went to. Almost all of the footprints were partially in the muddy dirt and partially in the uprooted turf making it impossible to get a mold. Before I could get plaster to make a mold of the only footprint that would have been significant evidence for reporting the incident, it began to rain again and by the time it ended, the print was washed away.
I interviewed the nearest neighbors who were located about ½ a mile down the dirt road, Purdum Road. They told me stories of creatures that were seen by hunters in the wooded area between our lot and their property. These creatures reportedly stood 8 feet tall, had hair covered bodies, and smelled very bad. These creatures weren’t seen very often but were heard rummaging about the animal barns, tool sheds, and woods during the night quite frequently ”“ particular during warm weather.
To the best of my knowledge, none of these sightings were ever reported to any organization or law enforcement agency. Oddly enough, however, in doing some research for the first Bigfoot article, I stumbled across a report filed very recently. It was filed by a man that lived on Purdum Road in Logan Ohio who claims that a Bigfoot tried to enter his father’s house in the spring of 1979 ”“ just 2 years before the episode I described. (1979 Bigfoot sighting on Purdum Road http://www.bfro.net/GDB/show_report.asp?id=8394)
Imagine that. Creatures that don’t exist reported in the heart of Ohio! And within a mile or two of where Harry came to visit me! My wife never got over the episode and we relocated shortly after that back to civilization and Angel ”“ well the timberwolf that wasn’t afraid of anything except Harry, was killed attacking a tractor trailer that was unfortunately moving at 50-60 miles an hour as Angel mistimed her leap and was struck in the head ”“ fatally.
