The idea of alternate realities and parallel universes has always been a topic of interest to both those intrigued by quantum physics and others who suggest that beyond the Newtonian physics we understand there is another more all encompassing physics where anything is possible. And now for the first time, evidence has been gathered by scientists suggesting our own universe may have in fact collided with others causing “bruising” in the form of radiation. The evidence is still highly controversial and many physicists are quickly weighing in on the subject with their own interpretation.
The idea of parallel realities and alternate universes is one that we’ve brought up time and time again. And each new discovery made by scientists suggests there is something else encoded into our current understanding of physics that suggests a world filled with possibility and limited only by the boundaries of the imagination. This theory of multiple universes, or “multiverses” has been an important staple in many types of fiction and could one day prove to be the final frontier for the human race and any other occupants of our current universe. The bruises discovered by physicists seem to suggest that our own universe was “bumped” by these alternate realities at least four times that we have been able to observe. The theory comes from Stephen Feeney from University College’s Department of Physics and Astronomy.
A conventional understanding of the universe as we know it says that everything in existence ever started with the massive Big Bang, which occurred some 13.7 billion years ago and whose results we have been observing ever since. Unlike other explanations for the existence of the universe, The Big Bang theory holds that the event happened under circumstances that we do not entirely understand today. And it does not explain what there was prior to the Big Bang, or how long that was around. Instead, these mysteries are left to other disciplines of physics (such as quantum physics and the experiments at CERN) which have been trying to work out the specifics for decades.
But one question that arises in the event of parallel realities or alternate universes would have to be, “Do these realities have creatures in them as well?” If the answer is yes, then their exploration would be all the more interesting as the interactions between human beings and other entities in the multiverse could ultimately teach us much about ourselves and the universe (or multiverse.) And in the search for life, and the understanding that we might not be the sole species in existence that has gained sentience, we come to understand just how important it might be to make discoveries such as these to broaden the ever expanding horizons of humanity and reach for the stars and even beyond.
The information was drawn largely from a map of background radiation and correlations between the different points that suggest rings where the “Big Bang” event builds up a pattern.
