There have been many UFO sightings throughout the years, whether real or imagined, but there have been some that have caused greater stirs than others. In this article, you will learn of some of the most notable UFO reports throughout history, including sightings reported by governors and senators.
A gathering of disc-shaped objects was reported in 1947, to appear in the sky by a former fighter pilot, who fought in World War II. Kenneth Arnold claimed to have seen these objects close to Mt. Ranier in Washington. His claims caused a stir across the nation as to whether or not UFOs really did exist. When reporters asked him a million questions on his experience, he described the UFOs as “ saucers,” which has stuck ever since.
It was January 6, 1969 and United States President, Jimmy Carter declared that he has spotted an UFO. When he first encountered this experience, he was not the president at the time, but the Governor of Georgia. He described the object has large, bright and possessed the ability to change colors. The object was so large that he claimed it was the size of the moon. He was able to watch the object for about ten minutes, but was unaware at what he was exactly viewing. He also stated that if he ever became President, he would inform the public about UFO sightings and make sure that all information on the subject would be readily available.
So, we have a governor-turned-president who has claimed to see a UFO, now we have a senator, who was considered one of the most powerful and influential throughout history. Senator Richard B. Russell, Jr. claimed to have spotted two UFOs during a stay in 1955 Russia. His claims were kept under wraps for more than three decades. The United States government saw it fit to keep this information a secret. Russell was traveling with an interpreter and a military aide, when he saw a disc-shaped craft rising into the sky, close to the train he was riding on. His experience was reported to the United States Air Force, which was promptly labeled “Top Secret.”
In 1997, strange lights were reported to be moving across the sky in the city of Phoenix. There were numerous witnesses that can attest to this experience, including scientists, teachers, police officers, as well as airline pilots. The lights traveled from Prescott to Tucson, where reports swirled every few minutes or so. The unidentifiable object was described as being red-orange in color, appearing as a cluster of lights. Some believed that it was configured in a “V” formation. One account stated that it resembled a boomerang. When it came time for the government to do some explaining, they told the public that what was seen came from the Air Force. They claimed that it was a series of flares that were set off during a training exercise. There is a bit of discrepancy with the statements released by the government because the timetables do not quite match up with what the public was told about the matter.
