In 1947, when the Roswell incident first broke in newspapers, the public believed the world was about to change. When the story was retracted hours later, the press submitted that the crash had been nothing more than a weather balloon. Trust in the government would remain largely intact and the incident would not be questioned further until decades later. The resignation of Richard Nixon and the Vietnam War both contributed to a rising tide of people suspicious of the government. And soon the idea of other government coverups would be explored publicly. But which agencies would likely be responsible for a conspiracy of intergalactic proportions?
The idea of a government conspiracy to hide the visitation of aliens has become so intrinsically linked in some circles to the UFO phenomenon that many people believe one cannot exist without the other. The belief of UFOs and a government conspiracy to keep their existence hidden seem to go hand in hand. And the slew of book authors suggesting just that has certainly not stemmed the tide of believers in a cosmic conspiracy. But “the government” as a singular entity does not exist in the way many people believe. In fact, the government is a collection of many agencies who do not necessarily communicate and may even be competing for resources in the form of tax dollars. So if most of the government is unaware of an alien coverup, who might need to be involved?
NASA – The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has come under fire lately for the doctoring of photographs taken in space. Long before the Disclosure Project’s 2001 press conference the suspicion that photographs and radio transmissions from space were being censored by NASA was already entangled in UFO lore. But could an agency that requires funding for research in human developed rocket programs be withholding valuable technology from even its own senior staff members? Or is it a large conspiracy involving every level of the largely public program? While it doesn’t seem beyond the realm of possibility that NASA is trying to keep its images from causing an accidental press nightmare, is the program compartmentalized enough to keep evidence from leaking out? Would those at the top of a coverup consider NASA trustworthy enough?
“The Military” – While there are numerous branches of the military, the agency most pointed to is the Air Force. The compartmentalization of this agency would make it perfect for the research and reverse engineering of alien technology. The Air Force, however, answers directly to the president making it unlikely the president would not be informed if the military were involved.
The Presidents – Though the president isn’t a government agency, he is the head of the Executive branch making him a likely candidate (pun absolutely intended) for the inner circle of an interstellar conspiracy. Each administration that comes into office is expected to be the one to finally disclose the presence of aliens visiting Earth. Bill Clinton called for an unofficial inquiry into the matter according to his own words in a televised interview after his presidency ended. He told the interviewee he was very interested, but uncovered nothing. Some have said a man doesn’t become president without learning to lie. Others say he was the one being lied to. Still others suggest there was simply nothing to lie about.
While these three groups are not the only possibilities, they are the three that seem to come up the most. Other potential candidates include any number of the ABC agencies, private organizations, shadow organizations, cells of shadow organizations, cults, corporate interests, the UN, and any visiting aliens themselves. Is it possible such a thing could remain secret? With a long history of secrecy our society has demonstrated time and time again that secrets can be kept until they are ready to come out.
