The Plot

The movie is set in 1954, where U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels has gained an assignment that takes him to the Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital located in Boston. He is set to investigate the disappearance of a patient. This assignment has special meaning to the marshal as he has personal reasons why he would like to reach the island. Along the way, he learns that the doctors at the hospital perform radical treatments that cross the lines of ethics and the law.

During his time on the island, Daniels is able to find a break in the case, but is met with opposition when his request to access certain records is denied by the hospital. To make matters worse, a hurricane cuts off contact to the mainland and Daniels finds himself on an island surrounded by dangerous criminals. His experience starts to take a toll on his mind, and he starts to doubt his own memory, his sanity, and even his own partner.
